Ramilaben, The Wonder Milk-Maid Of India

Ramilaben Govindbhai Patel has never been to any kind of college but at the age of 43, she still makes more money than many CEOs make. She made a total profit of Rs. 1.10 crore during the year 2011-12. And the interesting part is that she made all this money by milking cows. Everyday she milks cows and supplies milk to a dairy co-operative.

At her dairy farm in Pertarpura Village, Sabarkantha district, she churns about 5.55 lakh litres of milk per year. This huge profitable family business of her started as just a backyard business. And now she’s a live example of the success story of the change that White Revolution has in life of the farmers.

All this started twelve years ago when Ramilaben registered herself as a primary milk producer at Pentarpura’s Dudh Mandali (milk society). She took a bank loan for five cross-bred cows. And now she runs ‘Jai Ranchod Dudh Utpadan Kendra’. It is a five-acre home to 280 cattle and provides employment to 40 workers. It even has four automatic milking machines.

She is even planning to set up a calf-rearing farm alongside a fully computerized ‘tabela’. For this she and her husband Govindbhai visited Israel last year to finalise plans. The estimated cost of modernization process is Rs 1 crore.

She tells, “Our farm has 24-hour water, cooling system, fodder chaffing machines and other things but we now want to adopt Israeli technology where rotary units will milk cows automatically and also indicate the fat content”.

Ramilaben is an inspiration to the women of Gujarat. Women are the backbone of the dairy industry. Stats say that out women run 2,124 milk societies out of a total of 16,117 societies. Also out of 31.8 lakh, 8.2 lakh are women in around 15 districts.

R S Sodhi, managing director of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets the brand Amul says, “A quarter of our total members are women but their contribution to the productivity of the dairy sector is much more”.
