Bihar: Woman Who Sold Child For Rs. 62 Goes Missing

The poor woman from Bihar’s Araria district has gone missing after it made into news that she had sold her month year old son for Rs 62 only to a Nepalese couple.

Political war has started in the state and opposition parties have started firing on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who assured action to be taken in the case. On Monday, Nitish Kumar told media that it was a serious matter and the government will take aaction in this case. He said, “The government will take action in this matter”.

The woman’s name was Shannu Khatun. She was in her mid 30s and was struggling for survival. She sold her four month old son to a Nepalese couple at Forbesganj railway station, near the Indo-Nepal border in Araria, about 350 km from Patna.

Shivdeep W. Lande, Superintendent of police, Araria said, “Khatun has disappeared from the railway station, police have been trying to trace her whereabouts. She may be hiding, fearing police action. But police are keen to help her to recover of her sold child. Police have been investigating”.

According to the police, they couldn’t find her in her village as she was not found there. Khatun left her village with her children a few days ago and took shelter at the Forbesganj railway station. She denied that she had sold her son, but she admitted that she gave him away for his own sake. Police suspect that Khatun was forced to leave the railway station by the RPF and railway authorities due to their embarrassment by the incident.

Khatun’s eight-year-old elder daughter Sabina told some local residents that her mother had sold her younger brother to a Nepalese couple for Rs.100 in Nepalese currency (Indian Rs.62).

Earlier, Syed Ahsan Ali, RPF said that Khatun had ‘donated’ her son to a Nepalese couple. He said,”She told us that she had not received any money for it.”

Opposition parties, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Congress and Left parties said that this case has exposed all the claims of development and progress made by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Ram Kirpal Yadav, RJD leader said, “What type of development it is when a poverty stricken woman is forced to sell her child for few rupees?”
