Paintable Battery: Use Wherever You Wish

Researchers from Rice University, Texas have invented an interesting paintable battery which could be literally used anywhere. Another interesting fact is that, the battery is rechargeable and can can store a charge of 2.4 volts upto 6 hours.

The battery was sprayed onto a variety of surfaces, including ceramic bathroom tiles, flexible polymers, glass, stainless steel and a beer stein to see how well they would function on each material.

The team of researchers disassembled the chemicals of a Li-ion battery and converted those chemicals into five different paints to create this battery. Then like conventional battery cell, these paints were sprayed in a particular order onto the ceramic tiles. After that 9 tiles were placed parallel with one tile topped by a solar cell that converted power from a white laboratory light. This combination produced a steady voltage of2.4 volts for 6 hours.

Scientist Pulickel Ajayan, professor of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Rice told Rice University media :

“There has been lot of interest in recent times in creating power sources with an improved form factor, and this is a big step forward in that direction”

The battery proved reliable and consistent during testing. It was consistent within 10 minutes of their target energy output. The battery was also tested for 60 charge-discharge cycles and they showed only a very small drop in capacity.
