The First Swallowable Electronic Devices Approved By FDA
A doctor can give you medicines to cure your disease and a health insurance can cover the cost of your treatment. But nothing can follow you around and remind you to take your medicines. To solve this problem, FDA has approved a special pill that can do it on its own. It would monitor your insides and relay the information back to a healthcare provider.
Proteus Digital Health has made such pill which is actually a sand particle sized silicon chip with small amount of magnesium and copper on it. After you swallow them, they generate voltage as they make contact with digestive juices. This voltage signals a patch on patient’s skin. The patch relays a message to the doctor’s mobile phone. This swallowable electronic device has been approved for use with placebos right now. But the company expects that their swallowable electronic device would get approved for use with other drugs too.
This swallowable electronic device can help track patient’s actions and will solve a major problem. Patients are generally ignorant about taking pills, especially those suffering from chronic illnesses. So this would help to cure and stop diseases to get worse in case of such people.
