When it came into news that Microsoft is removing the start button from its new Windows 8 for  good, many fans of its functionality were unhappy. Microsoft has now explained it to the world that why it has removed the start button which was there in every version of Microsoft Windows from the last 17 years.

Speaking to PC Pro, Chaitanya Sareen, principal program manager at Microsoft, explains the decision:

“We’d seen the trend in Windows 7. When we evolved the taskbar we saw awesome adoption of pinning [applications] on the taskbar. We are seeing people pin like crazy. And so we saw the Start menu usage dramatically dropping, and that gave us an option…

“So I’m a desktop user, I pin the browser, Explorer, whatever my apps are. I don’t go the Start menu as often. If you’re going to the Start screen now, we’re going to unlock a whole new set of scenarios, or you can choose not to go there, stay in the desktop, and it’s still fast. You can’t beat the taskbar.”

The start button is gone from Windows 8, but it’s not completely forgotten. It is now replaced by a hot corner at the lower left side of the screen. It is also complemented by another hot corner at the lower right side which offers even more menus and options that the former. It is difficult to ensure that would it please Start button fans, but let October come, the loss is something they’ll have to to face up to.
