Is Independence Day Really A Holiday?

An eye with Indian Tricolor paint

From our childhood, we used to believe that Independence day is a national holiday. But now the government says that it isn’t. Government says that it has no such record available that says that 15 August, 26 Jan or 2nd Oct is a national holiday.

This has been clarified in a response to an RTI, filed by a 10 year old girl, Aishwarya Parashar. She asked the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) about this during April. PMO sent her an application to ministry of home, who, forwarded the application to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) saying the subject matter of the application, the declaration of national holidays, does not pertain to MHA.

The ministry of home, on May 17, said that the government has issued no such order which notifies January 26, August 15 and October 2 as the national holidays.

Dissatisfied with the response, she moved an appeal to the Ministry of home saying that she has learnt about national holidays through her text books and that ministry probably has erred in saying that it does not possess any order on declaration of national holidays.

The appellate authority has also made a request to the National Archives to provide the copy of the order, if any, to the girl. But we are still waiting for the response from National Archives. Meanwhile the girl has written applications to both president and prime minister for seeking the answers for her queries.
