Indian Students Launch Satellite, Win Second Prize Internationally
A group of students from SRM University won second prize in a competition held last month. They successfully launched CanSat, a model satellite to read atmospheric conditions.
The American Astronautical Society (AAS) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) organized the competition called Planetary Atmospheric Entry Vehicle at Texas. It was sponsored by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and NRL (Naval Research Laboratory), USA.
Sidhant Dhall, team leader and final year student of Electronics and Instrumentation from SRM University, told that the launch was totally based on technology and CanSat consisted of two parts, the carrier and the lander. It was to be released from a rocket at a height of 2000 meters. After releasing, it was to descend at a speed of 10 m/s using some descent control system or parachutes.
He said, “We used three parachutes for different altitudes that were unfolded mechanically reducing the descent rate to five meters per second. It took about 15 seconds to reach the highest altitude and 80 seconds for descend. Every two seconds, it provided information on humidity, temperature, pressure and atmospheric tension. Those were recorded at the control room. Our team got the extra point; we had a buzzing system in lander and we located the lander within 500 meters from our control panel. This technology can be applied for further development and immediate forecasting depends on the time of landing”.
Team WELKINSAT from SRM University finished second internationally out of a total of 35 teams from 10 countries. Their team of 11 was awarded a cash prize of $1500.
Team WelkinSat (VaikunthSat Abhiyan) comprised of Sidhant Dhall, Pradip Gupta, Akshat Agarwal, Vivek Ranjan, Tunul Richesh, Mohit Saxena, Gaurav Accha, Triyambak Tripathy, Cheerudeep Chintha and Mihir Shah under the able guidance of A. Rathinam.
The other two teams from SRM University SRM CANSAT and Akshayaan finished 7th and 11th respectively at the international level.
