On 10th of October came the shocking news of the demise of Indian ghazal singer, Jagjit Singh, at the age of 70. The singer, composer, music director, activist and entrepreneur, was in a critical condition after he underwent a surgery for brain hemorrhage in Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai. He also had a history of heart ailments.

Jagjit Singh was one of the most talented ghazal singers and was famously known as “The Ghazal King”. He amalgamated ghazal and geet and thus simplified the form of the ghazal. He received a lot of credit for reviving and popularizing ghazal. His career spanned over five decades and he had a genre defining range and breath of work. He gave many hit albums with his wife Chitra Singh, also a ghazal singer. However, Chitra quit singing after the death of their only son Vivek in a road accident. Jagjit Singh’s contribution to the field of music has been such that he was awarded with Padma Bhushan in the year 2003.
Some of the most popular albums of Jagjit Singh include The Unforgetables, Ecstasies, Passions, A Sound Affair, Beyond Time, Someone Somewhere, Hope, In Search, Insight, Mirage, Visions, Kahkashan, Love Is Blind, Chirag, Sajda, Marasim, Face To Face, Aaeena, Cry For Cry, Sahar, Muntazir, Marasim, Soz and many more. He also sung Gurbani and Bhajans. He has been singing in a number of languages including Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali. He also sang songs for some movies, such as Prem Geet, Arth and Saath Saath and TV serials, such as Mirza Ghalib and Kahkashan.

After the sad news of Jagjit Singh’s death surfaced, social networking sites were pouring with condolence messages to his wife, family and friends. He is survived by his wife Chitra Singh. Jagjit Singh will be deeply missed by all his fans and the music fraternity. Rest in peace, Ghazal King!
